Arizona 10-MW/2.5 MWh energy storage project comes online

Tucson Electric Power, E.ON Climate and Renewables and Greensmith Energy dedicated the Iron Horse Battery Storage Energy Project in Arizona on June 1.

The 10-megawatt/2.5 MWh energy storage system at the University of Arizona Science and Technology Park will provide frequency response and voltage control for TEP.

The project illustrates the growing trend of programmable battery storage replacing fossil generation as the least-cost solution for grid reliability services, according to Greensmith Energy. The system also provides integration for a new 2-MW solar array.
