Minnesota first US state to embrace ‘value of solar’ tariff

The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission last week embraced a “value of solar” tariff for determining how community customers will be paid for excess solar power.

The development, first reported by Midwest Energy News, marks the first time a value of solar rate has been adopted in the U.S. by an investor-owned utility – in this case Xcel Energy. The PUC’s decision came as part of a ruling (PDF) on changes proposed to the state’s community solar garden program.
