Minnesota Power plans coal exit by 2035

The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission approved Minnesota Power’s 15-year Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), which includes retiring the company’s remaining coal-fired plant.

According to the plan, Boswell Energy Center Unit 3 would be retired by the end of 2029, with Unit 4 ending coal operations in 2035. Boswell Unit 3 provides 335 MW of capacity and Unit 4 provides 468 MW.

In future filings Minnesota Power could consider whether to retire Unit 4 in 2030, five years earlier than the timeline in the plan just approved by state regulators.

The plan calls for adding up to 400 MW of wind and 300 MW of solar power generation. Minnesota Power said that is nearly twice what the company proposed in its initial IRP filing in February 2021.
