Public power, grid operator successfully respond to soaring demand in the West

With temperatures soaring past the 100-degree mark in much of the West the week ending June 23, the region’s public power community successfully managed the resulting spikes in power demand.

On June 19, the California Independent System Operator issued a statewide “Flex Alert” under which the grid operator called for voluntary electricity conservation from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. on June 20 and June 21.

“Consumers are urged to conserve electricity especially during the late afternoon when air conditioners typically are at peak use. Consumers can help avoid power outages by turning off all unnecessary lights, using major appliances before 2 p.m. and after 9 p.m., and setting air conditioners to 78 degrees or higher,” CAISO said in a June 19 news release related to the Flex Alert.
