Southern Company: A Utility With Bullish Fundamentals

September 2, 2021

Southern Company (NYSE:SO) is a leading utility that provides electricity in three states and supplies natural gas to 4.3 million customers across four states.

Like the stock price of many other utilities, Southern Company’s stock price fell around March of 2020 due to the market declining. Due to valuations decreasing, Southern Company’s valuation also decreased.

Because most of the company’s earnings are from regulated state utilities, however, Southern Company’s earnings per share excluding items nevertheless increased in 2020. For 2020, Southern Company’s earnings per share excluding items was $3.25, or $0.14 per share higher than it was in 2019.
