Grants worth more than $12 million were approved by Annapolis’s Maryland Board of Public Works to reduce water pollution in the Chesapeake Bay area. The wastewater systems have already received a total of $11 million in grants from the Bay Restoration Fund for the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plants with an emphasis on upgrading its nutrient removal systems. The additional funds will be put toward the nutrient removal systems. One highlight of the investments put into the nutrient removal systems is a reduced rate of nitrogen discharged at the bay equal to about 7,895,000 pounds per year.
