A new biogas converter is being proposed for the Washtenaw County landfill. The proposed plant would be the largest of its kind in the country if approved. Developing a converter would also serve as a step in the right direction for the landfill toward its 2021 federal consent decree. The decree stems from an allegation of illegal sulfur dioxide emissions from the landfill, which makes the proposal appealing to decrease.
