Municipalities thinking green with CNG-fueled trucks, solar panels, other initiatives — and saving money

Green initiatives are becoming more prevalent as communities look for ways to operate more efficiently. To accomplish those goals, some in Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties are taking a hard look at the vehicles running in their fleets, switching to alternative fuels such as compressed natural gas, or CNG, and propane. In Lowell, the town is using solar panels to save money and energy. That’s a path familiar to Hobart, where a vision formed about six years ago to convert to alternative-fueled vehicles in the city. Following the recommendation of Hobart’s Public Works Department, the municipality acquired its first CNG truck in 2013.
