U.S. hydropower capacity could grow from 101 gigawatts to nearly 150 GW of combined electricity generation and storage capacity by 2050, according to a report released July 26 by the Department of Energy. Half of that growth could occur by 2030, the report said.
The report, Hydropower Vision: A New Chapter for America’s First Renewable Electricity Source, said that technology advancements, innovative market mechanisms, and a focus on environmental sustainability could lead to this magnitude of growth in hydro.
