A New Approach to Glass Recycling

With many towns suspending part or all of their recycling due to budget and staff restraints related to the pandemic, recyclers are encouraging towns to cut costs by trying new ways to reuse glass.

Many towns have been sending their glass to landfills, however, there are cheaper, local options that get more value out of the glass.

The Northeast Resource Recovery Association helps towns send glass to Canada to become fiberglass insulation or for it to be crushed into an aggregate that towns can use as a free alternative to sand and gravel in local road projects. One hundred towns across Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont are participating in these programs.
