Utilities ask FERC to hold off for now on modifications of cyber standards for control centers

Before it considers two possible modifications to critical infrastructure protection standards to address the cybersecurity of the control centers that are used to monitor and control the bulk electric system, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission should allow more time to evaluate the effectiveness of the existing standards, the American Public Power Association told the commission. Joining APPA in the Sept. 26 comments to FERC were the Large Public Power Council, or LPPC, and the Transmission Access Policy Study Group, or TAPS.

On July 21, the commission issued a notice of inquiry seeking comment on possible modifications to the CIP reliability standards regarding the cybersecurity of control centers, saying that they were a response to lessons learned from cyberattacks in Ukraine last year.
