Utility says microgrid can serve customers on distribution feeder

Ameren Illinois has launched a $5 million microgrid that the utility says is one of the few microgrids that can serve customers on a utility distribution feeder.

The microgrid at Ameren’s Technology Applications Center next to the University of Illinois campus in Champaign, Illinois, can produce up to 1.5 megawatts, Ameren Illinois, an Ameren Corp. utility, said May 18. Ameren is an investor-owned utility.

Microgrids are small energy systems that can run separately from the grid, making them ideal for facilities or wider areas that can’t afford to see their power go down.
