Portland General Electric’s Clearwater Wind Energy Center in Montana achieved an unprecedented milestone by generating 1 GW of power from wind sources within its first 10 months of operation, marking an impressive output record for PGE. The Clearwater Wind Energy Center, developed in four phases by a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources, spans across Rosebud, Custer, and Garfield counties. The center’s design incorporated advanced wind turbine technology to maximize efficiency and output, contributing significantly to its rapid achievements.
Portland General Electric owns 208 MW of the facility and also purchases an additional 103 MW through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). The Clearwater Wind Energy Center was selected through PGE’s 2021 request for proposals, highlighting the company’s rigorous selection process to ensure the best technological and environmental fit. Since its inception in January, the facility has leveraged existing infrastructure, transmitting the generated power to PGE customers via established lines and a vital 100-mile tie line connecting to the Colstrip substation. This efficient system integration has ensured steady and reliable energy delivery to the grid.
