Reconomy Connect and ReNewShoe Partner to Tackle Footwear Waste

In a significant step towards addressing the pressing issue of footwear waste, Reconomy Connect has announced a partnership with ReNewShoe aimed at reducing the environmental impact of discarded shoes through enhanced recycling efforts. Every year, the global footwear industry produces around 24.3 billion pairs of shoes, with an astonishing 95% of these, equating to approximately 300 million tons, ending up in landfills or being incinerated. This partnership is set to revolutionize the way footwear waste is managed, promoting a circular economy approach by extending the lifecycle of materials and keeping valuable resources in circulation.

The uniqueness of this collaboration lies in the establishment of specific drop-off locations at Reconomy Connect facilities where consumers can conveniently deposit their old footwear for recycling. These drop-offs aim to simplify the traditionally complex recycling process, making it more accessible to the general public. Once collected, ReNewShoe will handle the processing of these discarded shoes. Through sophisticated mechanical processes, they will extract valuable materials such as rubber, foam, leather, and various fibers. These materials are then ground down into usable substances including granulated rubber, foam, mixed fibers, metals, and textile fuzz. These recycled substances will be repurposed into new products such as picnic tables, flooring for sports facilities, and innovative circular-designed shoes.

Advancing Sustainable Recycling Methods

ReNewShoe has previously demonstrated its expertise in sustainable recycling methods through its collaboration with Fast Feet Grinded, a notable European footwear recycler. Together, they successfully created the ASICS Neocurve sneaker, a remarkable product made entirely from recycled materials. Gareth Denton Smith, managing director of ReNewShoe, has been deeply committed to addressing the scarcity of effective footwear recycling methods. By leveraging state-of-the-art technologies, ReNewShoe is able to maximize material reuse and significantly reduce waste. This approach aligns seamlessly with Reconomy Connect’s extensive waste collection infrastructure and technological capabilities.

The footwear industry poses a substantial challenge for recycling due to the complex composition of shoes, which are made from over 60 different components including textiles, polymers, rubber, and bonding agents. This complexity has historically hindered the adoption of circular methodologies within the industry, causing it to lag behind other segments of the fashion industry in terms of sustainable innovations. By joining forces, Reconomy Connect and ReNewShoe aim to overcome these hurdles, providing the footwear industry with viable recycling solutions that promise to reduce its environmental footprint.

The Importance of Tackling Footwear Waste

Dave Seal-Yates, head of circular solutions at Reconomy Connect, emphasized the critical importance of addressing hard-to-recycle footwear waste. He noted that this collaboration not only has the potential to generate significant cost savings for businesses but also unlocks commercial opportunities by keeping valuable resources in circulation. By reducing the need for virgin material production, the partnership helps in preventing waste from ending up in landfills, making a substantial contribution to the fight against environmental degradation.

For consumers, the process has been made intuitively simple yet highly impactful. By encouraging individuals to drop off their old footwear at designated locations, the initiative fosters community involvement in sustainable practices. This seamless approach not only streamlines the recycling process but also raises awareness about the importance of sustainability in everyday choices. The partnership’s success will largely depend on public participation and the footwear industry’s willingness to embrace sustainable recycling innovations.

Looking Ahead to a Sustainable Future

In a major move to tackle the growing issue of footwear waste, Reconomy Connect has partnered with ReNewShoe to lessen the environmental impact of thrown-away shoes through improved recycling initiatives. The global footwear industry makes about 24.3 billion pairs of shoes each year, and shockingly, 95% of these end up in landfills or are incinerated, totaling around 300 million tons annually. This collaboration aims to transform footwear waste management by promoting a circular economy, extending the lifespan of materials, and ensuring valuable resources stay in use.

What sets this partnership apart is the creation of designated drop-off sites at Reconomy Connect locations where consumers can easily deposit their unwanted shoes for recycling. This initiative aims to make the recycling process more straightforward and accessible for everyone. Once the shoes are collected, ReNewShoe will process them, extracting materials like rubber, foam, leather, and fibers. These materials will be transformed into usable substances such as granulated rubber, mixed fibers, metals, and textile fuzz, which are then repurposed into new products like picnic tables, sports facility flooring, and circular-designed shoes.
